Event Date:

28 Oct 2019

Event Time:

07:00 PM

Event Location:

Like Sew Amazing , Bristol

This course is perfect to help you at the start of your sewing journey. Each class focuses on new techniques so that you learn something new every week and build your confidence in dressmaking. The classes will run on Monday evenings from 7-9pm and are on 28th Oct, 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th Nov and 2nd Dec.

In this 6 week introduction to dressmaking course, you will learn the following:

  • How to measure yourself properly
  • How to read and understand sewing patterns
  • How to cut out your paper pattern
  • How to cut out your garment and transfer important markings
  • How to construct a garment

Weeks 1 & 2 will focus on making a pair of pyjama bottoms.

Weeks 3-6 will focus on making a dress.

You will need to bring:

  • 2.5m of light to medium cotton fabric for your pyjama bottoms.  (either cotton lawn or cotton poplin would work best but we can advise in store)
  • Fabric & thread and matching concealed zip for your dress (we can help guide you in suitable fabrics during the first two weeks)

We will supply:

  • All equipment, interfacing, elastic and patterns

This class is aimed at beginners or those who want to reacquaint themselves with their sewing machine! There will be a requirement to do some homework as you will need to cut out your dress pattern between weeks 2 and 3. You could always join us at Thursday night sewing club if you would like to use our cutting tables.

About our Tutor:

Danish independent fashion designer Eva Thyghoj has always in some way or another worked with or in fashion. Her teens were spent creating and upcycling clothes, and later, after having moved from Denmark to London, Eva spent 10 years working her way up in London’s fashion industry – sewing, pattern cutting and designing.
In 2003 Eva set up her own clothing Label, Toohoi, making a contemporary, slow fashion range for women. 16 years later and Tooho0i, now Bristol based, is still going strong.
Eva started teaching for TheWea in 2012, running courses within her field.
Eva also runs Home Grown Gift shop at Windmill Hill City, an Artist collective shop founded in 2014 and, more recently, the Cutting Room, which is a textile artist space.
